BJÖRKÖN
Nature reserve
A paddle trip of about 7 km takes you to Björkön, which is one of the larger islands in Hjälmaren with a natural environment that is rare in Örebro County.
The island is a nature reserve and here you will find old deciduous forests, younger deciduous forests, open pastures, wetlands and reed areas. The varied vegetation means that many different plants, animals and insects thrive.
If you are lucky, you can see some of the rich wildlife on the island, such as beavers and sea eagles. As the island is quite secluded, it becomes a haven for many wildlife. In addition to the wild animals, sheep are taken to the island to graze to keep the old farmland open.
The nature reserve is 476 hectares and also includes the surrounding water area and some smaller islands around Björkön.
